Sparkling smiles & Festive feasts: Navigating the holidays with braces
The holiday season is a magical time, full of joy, family, and, let’s be honest, an abundance of delicious food! At The London Lingual Orthodontic Clinic, we want to ensure your smile stays just as bright and healthy as your festive spirit. While it’s tempting to indulge in every treat that comes your way, a little extra care will go a long way in protecting your teeth and your braces.
Here are our top tips for a worry-free, brace-friendly festive period:
Be mindful of festive foods.
Christmas dinner, New Year’s Eve parties, and countless boxes of chocolates, the holidays are a minefield for brace wearers!
Steer clear of sticky & hard treats: toffees, hard candies, fruitcake with hard nuts, and even some crunchy roasted vegetables can be problematic. These can bend wires, dislodge brackets, or get stuck in your braces.
Watch out for chewy treats: mince pies, panettone, and even some breads can be surprisingly chewy. Cut food into smaller pieces to make it easier to manage.
Limit sugary drinks: mulled wine, fizzy drinks, and hot chocolate are festive favourites but high in sugar. Enjoy them in moderation and rinse your mouth with water afterwards.
Maintain your oral hygiene routine!
The hustle and bustle of holiday travel and late nights can make it easy to skip brushing and flossing. Please don’t!
Brush after every meal: This is crucial, especially with lingual braces. Food particles can easily get trapped. Carry a travel toothbrush and toothpaste with you.
Make sure you floss diligently: Use your interdental brushes or special orthodontic floss to clean around your brackets and wires.
Don’t run out of essentials!
Stock up on elastics: If you wear orthodontic elastics, please check your supply now. If you’re running low, contact us before the festive period begins to arrange to get some more. We want to ensure your treatment stays on track!
Be prepared for any minor issues.
While we hope your holidays are completely hassle-free, minor issues can sometimes arise. If a wire comes loose or a bracket detaches, try to gently push it back into place with a clean finger or a cotton bud. If it’s causing irritation, cover it with orthodontic wax and let us know. For any concerns or emergencies, please don’t hesitate to contact us, and we will advise you on the best course of action.
Embrace the festive spirit (and your stunning smile!)
Remember, your braces are a temporary journey towards a lifetime of confident smiles. The holidays are a wonderful time to celebrate, so enjoy responsibly. With a little planning and careful attention, you can enjoy all the festive fun without compromising your orthodontic treatment.
From all of us at The London Lingual Orthodontic Clinic, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year filled with joy, laughter, and dazzling, healthy smiles!
