How long will my orthodontic treatment take?

The treatment time will vary depending on the complexity of each case. Each patient  receives a  comprehensive and individually personalised treatment plan, which can take anywhere between 6 to 24 months to ensure the best outcomes are reached

How do the braces feel?

Just like regular braces, lingual braces may be uncomfortable for the first few days. During this time:

  • you may take painkillers to reduce the discomfort
  • you may place wax over the brackets to reduce the irritation to the tongue; this will provided in your care kit when your braces are first fitted
  • aim to maintain a diet of softer, easier-to-eat foods – more information can be found in the ‘what can I eat?’ section below

Will lingual orthodontic treatment affect my speech?

Many people notice a temporary change in their speech, but the brackets we use minimise this problem, and it usually improves after an initial period of adaptation. If speech is a concern, personally or professionally, we can refer you to a speech therapist.

How easy will it be to clean my teeth?

It will be more challenging because you will need to spend more time keeping your teeth clean and cleaning the braces. You should, therefore, aim to see a hygienist to have your teeth cleaned professionally every 3-4 months during treatment.

It is also Asif’s policy to ensure that patients’ teeth improve from all perspectives, and we have a hygienist working in the clinic if you would prefer to keep all your professional dental cleaning in-house during your treatment.

What can I eat?

During your first week in braces, we recommend choosing soft, easy-to-swallow foods, such as soups or smoothies. Nutritionist Farzanah Nasser has written some delicious recipes on our blog.

Will my teeth stay in the same position after treatment is complete?

We recommend that all our patients wear their retainers to protect their investment in their newly straightened smile. Wearing retainers is the only way to guarantee the stability of treatment.

I live overseas. Is it possible to become a patient?

We welcome many patients from overseas who can travel here for their appointments. We are happy to help with hotel bookings and travel plans to make this easier. And as many of the UK’s top medical, health and beauty clinics are just a short walk away from our Harley Street clinic, combining your orthodontic treatment with other appointments is easy.
