The Dreaded Stink

Bad breath is something we consciously all avoid but sometimes there are people with terrible breath who have no idea. Broaching the subject isn’t easy. There are many websites out there with advice on how to tell someone. Wikihow suggests practicing good dental health in front of the person (that could be a bit subtle) or pretending to have bad breath yourself and discussing the remedies or offering gum with a firm look into the friend’s eyes. But what if it’s part of your job to do some straight talking?

The most common cause for bad breath is poor oral hygiene but it can be linked to nutrition, ENT issues or it can be stomach-related.

It’s common for patients to ask our hygiene team about bad breath in relation to orthodontics. Also known as Halitosis, bad breath is common and can be caused by a build up of bacteria on the teeth, tongue and gums. Like so many other things to do with your mouth, a good hygiene routine is the best way to avoid suffering from halitosis.

Here are three top tips to help you avoid bad breath whilst wearing braces:

– A through daily, cleaning routine. Clean your braces, inbetween as well as the fronts and backs of your teeth!

– Keep hydrated. A dry mouth is another contributing factor.

– Carrying around a little travel kit with a toothbrush, paste, wax and floss to help combat any trapped and strong smelling foods during the day.

– Invest in a tongue-scraper
